Today is a big day for Mixed Media Labs (the parent company of picplz and more to come). We have raised a $5MM Series A investment from Andreessen Horowitz. As an added bonus, Marc Andreessen will be joining our board of directors.
Quick history review: I was founder/CEO of imeem, a social music site that was founded in 2003. With six years of ups, downs and lessons learned, we sold the company to MySpace last December. A few months later, I launched Mixed Media Labs with imeem’s former CTO, Bryan Berg with a vision of building great smartphone applications and services.
Bryan and I have been busy building the core technology and team to help us realize our vision. With a few exceptions, we’ve re-formed the core engineering team that created the imeem mobile service for Android and iPhone. Our imeem mobile service was extremely successful by any metric and won honors including the 2008 TechCrunch “Crunchie” award for best mobile application. We’re taking everything we learned and will apply it to products that come out of Mixed Media Labs.
We are excited to be working with Andreessen Horowitz. Marc and Ben have a strong technical and operational background that will undoubtedly help us build Mixed Media Labs into a great company. Startups are a team sport, and I see a shared vision between the Marc & Ben’s team-oriented approach with ours.
The past nine months have been a fun ride: We’ve formed a company; defined our first product; wrote our first line of code; raised an angel round; hired a core team; shipped a 1.0 to the public (with updates and new code rolling out continuously); raised a series A, all while constantly improving the product across three discrete platforms (iPhone, Android, web) and learning a great deal during the entire process. And we’re just getting started — we look forward to sharing more about our broader plans soon.
